What the Hell Do You Want?
It’s hard to imagine that there is more to say about goal setting that has not already been said. However, the reason this topic is never finished is because so many people are still not setting goals consistently. Here’s a quick and dirty test to see if you need to read the rest of this article ::
Look at your life.
Is it brimming with the things and experiences that you actually want?
If yes :: Go ‘head with your bad self! (You can now move onto another activity.)
If not :: Why the hell not?! (Keep reading.)
Most of my clients come to be with the some variation of the same statement ::
I don’t know what I want, but I know it ain’t this!
My immediate response to this angst is ::
Are you ready to figure it out?
Most of the people I know and work with label themselves as Audacious. Audacious people often want to be successful, noteworthy, wealthy, and/or famous. Audacious people want more out of life. They want to feel like they’ve achieved something important.
But you have to know what you are driving at in order to achieve anything meaningful! Put another way, you have to know what particular end you want to be truly Audacious.
It’s time to start answering that big, scary-ass question…What the hell do you want?
I know it’s the hardest question I ask. The following exercise is designed to spur your thinking on what you want your Audacious life to look like in the future.
The goal of this exercise is to create a clear picture in your head of your goals. You do NOT need to have answers to all of these questions. These questions are intended as a brainstorming mechanism – nothing more. Assume money is not an issue, that you have plenty. And you can worry about HOW to get this vision later. For now, just dream
outrageously and put it down on paper!

Take some time to ponder these questions and then summarize your initial thoughts into a paragraph or two. All I’m asking you to do is simply start asking yourself the questions you’ve been hiding from and see what comes up. Think with your Audacity…
1. You – How do you take care of yourself? How do you dress? How much drinking water per day? What kind of body? Exercise program? Diet? How much energy do you have? How many walks/fresh air do you take in? How much alone time? How much sleep do you get? What else do you get to take excellent care of yourself? Massages? Manicures? Facials? A personal trainer? Your own in-home Pilates studio?
2. Work – For this exercise, remember you do not need a job-job. You have plenty of money, right? So, in your perfect world without money woes, is there a career you would enjoy? What would you create or make? What service would you provide? What kinds of things have you enjoyed in past careers, or do you think you would be good at? What kind of people would you work with? What hours would you work? Work from home, or in a funky office building with a slide down the middle?
3. Love – Do you have a partner? Do you want one? What are you looking for? From your partner, do you want a commitment for life, or a commitment for now? What kind of commitment do you want to make? Do you want an exclusive relationship or one where you explore other relationships? To what limits? Kids?
4. Peeps – How many friends do you want in your life? What qualities do your friends have? Do they drop by spontaneously, or set up weeks in advance? Do your friends know your other friends? What are your friends like? What does your family life look like? Ideally, how would your relationship with your mother look? Father? Siblings? Best friend? (Don’t let your history block you here. Imagine ideal relationships!)
5. Stuff – Where would you live geographically? City or suburb? Which country? House? Apartment? Loft? On the water? In the country? Friendly community? Climate? What would your bedroom look like? What lighting, artwork, flowers, smells? Your yard? How tidy is the house? Do you have a housekeeper? Someone who shops for you? Who does the washing? What car do you drive? Do you have a car? What are your desired trappings?
6. Whimsy – What else do you do in your Moxielicious lifestyle? Garden? Paint? Bike? Fish? Cook? Write? Sing? Travel? Make your own pottery? When you gather with friends or family, what do you do? Do you travel? Where? How often? What do you do when traveling? What do you do for adventure? What do you do for relaxation? What do you do for kicks?
7. Muchness – If the rest of your life was perfect and handled, to whom would you contribute? To your family? The environment? Your local community? The world? What do you strongly believe in? What do you love? What do you hate? How would you contribute? Donate money, time, muscle, or brainpower? What legacy would you like to leave behind when you die? What could that look like?
So, What Do You Want?
I hope this exercise has got your wheels turning and you are starting to tap into your Audacity. If you are ready for more tools, check out this video where I share three more ways you can start figuring out what the heck you actually want. http://coachjennie.com/what-you-actually-want/
